LED Lights' "Warm and Cool white" in layman's terms.

With all the talk and news about the benefits of LED Lighting, It may become difficult to decide which LED to use. Though choices are good, some customers who are new to LED technology don’t appreciate that LED bulbs come in different variations of “white”.

This decisions were not present with traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs since these bulbs simply work by passing electricity through a wire that glows hot. This glow produces the light that can be seen. However, since LED bulbs have a completely different technology, much technically advanced possibilities of colors and textures to choose from is an advantage that may seem like a task to some.

In simpler terms, the colour temperature of light can be measured as a number on the Kelvin scale. This is represented by a number followed by the symbol “K”. High colour temperatures of over 5000K are said to be cool colours and often have a blue tone to them. Low colour temperatures of 2,500 – 3,200 on the other hand, are said to be warm colours and have yellow or orangey tones to them.

A few examples of the difference in Kelvin can be related to some common known light sources. On an overcast day, the light would be around 6,500K. A candle flame has a Kelvin value of 2000K and Sunlight at midday has a Kelvin value of 5500K

Now that we have a rough idea on how Kelvin denotes the light colour, we can then move to LED lighting.

With LED bulbs there are often two options of white colour normally referred to as warm white or cool white. Warm white is usually around 3000K and cool white around 5000-6000K. When choosing your bulbs you should check the Kelvin value of the bulb.

The light given off by a warm white LED bulb can be described as soft and warm with a slight yellow hint to it.

15w-dimmable-cool epistarTry purchasing cool white LED bulbs if you want the brightest light possible or want to give your room a modern or minimalist theme. Cool White LED Lights normally suits colour schemes that are bright and bold and use primary colours, or even colour schemes that are predominantly white where a clean minimal look is required.

Using both colour tones in one room is also possible on different switches to provide different options on how you want your to look. You may want warm white bulbs in the kitchen ceiling for everyday use but also have under unit lighting in cool white in order to give a very different effect at night once the main lights are off.

Consider these things when deciding which LED colour tone to purchase. By knowing colour tones in layman's terms, you can now make an informed and considered opinion when choosing your LED bulbs.
